There are vintage knives that are simply old, knives that are beautifully made, and then there are knives that feel like they were made by someone who regarded the knife itself as a form of art. This remarkable and remarkably clean vintage hunter/skinner combination belongs firmly in the latter category.Hand made by the legendary Japanese knifemaker Tak Fukuta, this is an extraordinary example of the level of craftsmanship associated with his work. Fukutu’s name is encountered on highly regarded handmade Seki/Japan knives from the Parker era, including substantial and unusually elaborate pieces from the 1980s. Collector references specifically document Parker knives identified as hand made in Japan by the late Tak Fukuta.What makes this knife so extraordinary is that the craftsmanship isn’t confined to the blades. The entire concept is beautifully engineered. A single, beautifully constructed bone-stag handle accepts either the hunter or skinner blade, with the blades locking securely into the hollow tang through an internal spring mechanism. To change blades, the spring is released by pressing downward on the jimping of the installed blade. It is an ingenious system, and the machining and mechanical execution are remarkably refined.And then there is the handle.The bone stag is spectacular. The jigging is hand done, with exceptional depth, crispness, and definition.
