About the steel: 440 has been called "the industry standard" and "The ideal compromise" between ease of sharpening and the ability to hold to hold an edge. 440 is hard enough to hold an edge but soft enough to sharpen easily with a common whetstone. 440C is a similar steel with a higher carbon content which enables it to hold an edge even better. Unfortunately, the other knife companies like Buck®, Case®, and Gerber® have chosen to switch to the lower carbon steel 420HC. The HC stands for High Carbon but it is lower than 440. The reason for their switch is that 420HC costs less than 440.
RainbowAnodizing is an electrochemical process that uses metallic saltsto convert the metal surface into a decorative, durable,corrosion-resistant finish that preserves the blade edge. The Resultis not a coating, nor does it use dyes. Voltage applied to the partthrough fixturing, in an electrolytic bath, controls the color. WhenTitanium salts are used there is an additional surface tension thatdoubles the effective Rockwell Hardness of the blade, raising it from~60 RoH to 100+. This knife should never need sharpening in normaluse. No return after sharpening.
