Note the picture of what retailers did for store credit to newsstand comic books. They would cut the tops of the covers to then throw the book out or whatever!
NEWSSTAND WARS!Newsstands (books with the UPC on cover) in the era of direct books have a truly interesting history in comic book lore that must be appreciated!
You ask Why are newsstand comic books so much more expensive than directcomic books (direct to comic book stores, books could not be returned for credit as comic book shops paid a cheaper price for them)? I tell you why!
Newsstand books went through the wars, epic battles! Books were Destroyed, Executed, by the dreaded Spinner Rack Spine Bend (SRSB)!Imagine snotty kids, even adults too!, at the 7-11 comic book spinner rackwith sticky fingers uncaringly grabbing a stack of comic books, bending them forward, creating color breaks/tears/corner creases, to get to the books in the back! Such Heresy! Yes, now you understand, and now appreciate, Why that newsstand commands such a greater price!
Those comic books that lived through all that to come out in high grade deserve combat medals! Comics were treated like perishable produce that had a one month shelf life before the next issue came. After a month on the shelf newsstand top covers were cut off then sent back for credit making them even More rare/scare! The rest of the book was thrown out, or whatever! How many were left? How many came out in high grade??
I\'ve included a chart by some industry big shots, including Chuck from Mile High, who estimate the percentage of newsstands Vs direct books! Look at how rare they were at the very end of the newsstand vs direct era!
Once collectors really understand the rarity of Newsstands in great shape we all know what will happen!!
