Exceptional Mid Century Hopi Rooster Kachina Doll

ThisMid 20th CHopiRooster Kachina Dolldepicts Kowako, a supernatural, who appears in the Water Serpent Ceremony. He also appears in winter and mixed dances and represents the appreciation of food provided for the village.The traditional cottonwood is beautifully detailed with tempera paints creating a finely paintedskirt and neat coloration including the charming applied blossom ears.

It has been noted that this wonderful and rarely seen Katsina came into being after the 1850s because it was around then that the Hopi acquired chickens.

This particular Rooster Katsina Doll is especially striking with its exceptional and colorful paint decoration. There’s a remnant sticker verso. Fresh to the marketplace. Measures approximately 9.5” H.
